In everyday conversation, &#8220;occupation&#8221; and &#8220;qualification&#8221; are often used interchangeably, yet they do not mean the same thing. If you want to understand how they function within education and the labour market, it is worth exploring what each term actually entails.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"zawod-&#x2212;-co-robisz-na-rynku-pracy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Occupation \u2013 what do you do in the labour market?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/psz.praca.gov.pl\/rynek-pracy\/bazy-danych\/klasyfikacja-zawodow-i-specjalnosci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Employment Services portal<\/a>, an occupation is a broad set of tasks that you perform to earn a living (for instance, as a programmer, chef, or tour guide). Every job demands relevant qualifications and skills acquired through education or practical experience.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may have a trained occupation \u2013 one you prepared for through school, college, or university. However, the occupation you actually practise does not necessarily have to match your formal education, even if it often does.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"kwalifikacje-&#x2212;-dowody-twojej-wiedzy-i-umiejetnosci\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qualifications \u2013 proof of your knowledge and skills<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A qualification is formal confirmation that you possess the required knowledge, skills, and social competences in a given field. This concept is legally defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/dziennikustaw.gov.pl\/D2024000160601.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrated Qualifications System (IQS) Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you complete a stage of formal education \u2013 such as school or higher education \u2013 you attain a full qualification (as set out in Article 8 of the IQS Act).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside full qualifications, you can also attain partial qualifications. Under the IQS Act, these can be achieved outside traditional schools and universities, encompassing regulated, market, sectoral, or craft qualifications. To gain such a qualification, you must undergo an official assessment of what you genuinely know and can do, conducted exclusively by authorised awarding bodies.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"a-jak-to-wyglada-w-praktyce\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does it look like in practice?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us look at some examples. Marek and Ania took different educational and career paths; both have attained full and partial qualifications and now work in their chosen fields.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Marek completed secondary school and went on to earn a Master\u2019s degree in economics. He works in a role that aligns with his studies: he is a financial analyst at a large multinational firm. Having set his sights on a promotion, he recently began strengthening his CV by gaining the market qualification &#8220;Management of accounting processes&#8221;. Next month, he plans to speak with his manager about his prospects for progression and whether he should pursue any further certificates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marek is also a passionate amateur mechanic and would love to help out at his cousin\u2019s garage at weekends. As a self-taught enthusiast, he plans to submit his existing skills for formal assessment \u2013 validation \u2013 next year to achieve the qualification &#8220;Electric and hybrid vehicle mechanic&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ania had always wanted to be a baker. She opted for sectoral vocational education and was awarded a vocational diploma. She later worked for a friend, specialising in traditional Italian baking. She also completed courses in Rome and continued learning independently. Looking to start her own business and train others, she decided to obtain a master craftsman diploma in baking. Today, she runs her own bakery and has taken on her first apprentices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"od-czego-zaczac\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to start?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where can you find out which qualifications are officially recognised in Poland, and how do you obtain them? Reliable information, alongside a comprehensive database of qualifications, is available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/kwalifikacje.gov.pl\/en\/\">kwalifikacje.gov.pl<\/a> portal. Formal education provides an important foundation; however, whenever you decide to take the next step in your career, you can always enhance your CV with new qualifications. Bear in mind that a wealth of opportunities awaits you: you can continue your formal studies at school or university, or develop new competences through other routes and have them certified by authorised awarding bodies.
