Does the thought of working at a desk fill you with dread? Do you find vehicle repairs straightforward and enjoy spending long hours on the road? If so, the “Driver-mechanic” qualification might be right for you.

What does a modern driver-mechanic do?

Do you associate this occupation with spending many hours behind the wheel? You are right, but there is much more to it. A driver-mechanic is a professional trained to handle a wide range of vehicle-related tasks and has a good understanding of transport. Their knowledge and skills also enable them to carry out routine vehicle checks and fix minor faults.

Education pathway: how to become a professional

The quickest way to obtain this qualification is through a stage I sectoral vocational school. Students attend theoretical classes and receive practical vocational training in workshops and transport companies.

After completing stage I sectoral vocational school and passing the vocational examination, graduates receive a diploma confirming their qualifications. They can then start working or continue their education at a stage II sectoral vocational school.

You can also have your skills, knowledge and competences formally confirmed by regional examination boards. Check the list of awarding bodies and the requirements for taking the examination: qualification page in the IQR.

If you want to continue learning, there are plenty of opportunities. For example, you can obtain licences to drive other categories of vehicles or certificates for market qualifications such as “Diagnosing and repairing electric and hybrid vehicles” or “Vehicle paintshop assistant”.

What skills do you need?

Training for this occupation focuses on practical skills. Graduates are knowledgeable in areas such as:

  1. Driving and transport.

This is the foundation of the occupation. A driver-mechanic must have a thorough knowledge of road traffic regulations, safe driving practices and the requirements for transporting goods. The ability to secure loads, plan routes and maintain transport documentation is also important.

  1. Diagnostics and repairs.

These skills are equally essential. A qualified professional can identify faults in the engine or suspension, change a wheel and understand the advanced systems that control modern vehicles. This makes a driver-mechanic an invaluable employee: they can assess whether a vehicle is fit to continue its journey or requires more extensive repairs. Among other things, this helps reduce fleet operating costs and ensures smooth deliveries.

Career prospects

This qualification is in demand not only in Poland. Transport companies, courier services, construction firms and public transport operators are constantly looking for employees. What gives driver-mechanics an advantage over people who have simply completed a driving course is their technical training.

Job opportunities can also be found in:

  • domestic and international transport companies,
  • vehicle repair workshops and vehicle inspection centres,
  • roadside assistance companies,
  • companies that manage and maintain their own vehicle fleets.
