Many people cannot imagine facing the morning without a cup of coffee. Every devotee of the drink has their own distinct preferences when it comes to the roast, the beans, or the way it is served. Among them are those who can detect subtle flavour notes or understand precisely how the roasting process shapes the final profile of the brew. Preparing coffee can therefore be far more than a simple morning ritual; it can unquestionably become a dedicated profession.

Not just a holiday job
It might begin as an idea for a summer job, but it can just as easily turn into a lifelong career – it all comes down to your personal ambitions and the opportunities you seize. By developing the necessary skills, you can become a true professional in the field: deepening your knowledge of coffee and brewing techniques, whilst also honing valuable customer service, sales, and management skills.
Employment opportunities for baristas can be found in:
- high-street chains and artisan coffee shops,
- restaurants, hotels, and cocktail bars,
- catering and events companies (such as running coffee carts and pop-up bars at weddings, conferences, and trade exhibitions).
You could also launch your own venture, such as a mobile coffee trike, an independent roastery, or your own café.
What is more, if you speak foreign languages, you can readily take your craft abroad and combine work with travelling – imagine working in an espresso bar in Rome, refining your technique amongst seasoned connoisseurs, and exploring Italy on your days off.
Where can you certify what you know and can do?
If you already possess a rich knowledge of coffee, love talking about it, can pull the classics with your eyes closed, and enjoy experimenting with bespoke blends and innovative brewing methods, consider having your expertise formally validated by gaining the ‘Barista’ qualification. This is an industry qualification designed especially for:
- secondary school pupils, college and university students, and graduates of catering and hospitality programmes (including waiting staff, bartenders, and sommeliers),
- individuals already working within the wider hospitality and catering sector (cafés, restaurants, hotels, pubs) who wish to upskill,
- specialist coffee shop staff and industry sales representatives,
- events and trade fair support personnel,
- aspiring entrepreneurs planning to launch their own business,
- career-changers looking to retrain and enter the specialty coffee industry.
In the Integrated Qualifications Register (IQR), you will find a comprehensive overview of this qualification, detailing the specific requirements and the awarding bodies certified to assess your skills.
Looking for training and funding?
If you are just starting out and searching for courses to prepare for this qualification, explore the Development Services Database (BUR). This is a publicly accessible, free-of-charge platform administered by the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP). It provides access to an extensive selection of training and advisory services co-financed by national and European funds, including courses, training programmes, business consultancy, workshops, postgraduate diplomas, and coaching. Adults undertaking training on their own initiative may be eligible for funding covering 80% or even 100% of the cost. A substantial number of BUR services are directly linked to qualifications recognised under the Integrated Qualifications System (IQS).
Take a look, for example, at ‘Preparing and serving coffee and coffee beverages – BARISTA’ or the standard ‘Barista’ course. There is a wide variety of opportunities available. You can view the full BUR offering directly within the qualification profile on the kwalifikacje.gov.pl portal.
A good idea or a passing whim?
Whether you work as a barista for a single summer, for a year, or for fifteen years, you will gain invaluable knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience. It can also simply be a wonderful adventure. Every effort invested in acquiring knowledge, gaining qualifications, and mastering the daily craft is well worthwhile – providing a solid foundation you can draw upon throughout every stage of your education and career.
