Finished your Matura? Discover your next steps

Young people

Have you finished your last Matura exam? This is a major milestone, marking the end of one chapter in your education. It’s such an important moment that you’ll probably look back on it for years to come. Now it’s time for new beginnings and choosing your next path.

Congratulations! You’ve reached an important milestone.

Taking your Matura exams and tackling such a huge amount of material is a real challenge and an achievement in itself. The Matura exams are about more than just written tests or oral exams in subjects like maths, Polish or biology. They also put your perseverance, time management skills and ability to cope with stress to the test.

After all that hard work, it’s worth taking some time to relax and recharge before your next challenges. You’re about to start a new and exciting chapter in your life, full of new experiences. There are several career and education paths open to you. Some depend on your Matura exam results, while others are available to everyone. Whatever you decide, it’s worth exploring your options in advance.

What are your options after your Matura exams?

The Matura exams play an important role in the Polish education system. Above all, they mark the end of your education at a general secondary school, technical secondary school or stage II sectoral vocational school. Your Matura results can open the door to higher education. But the Matura is more than just a route to university.

There’s no single right path to take after your Matura exams. Each option can lead to a different but equally exciting destination. What matters is choosing a path and a goal that match your skills and future plans.

What comes after your Matura exams? Here are some options:

  1. Higher education.
This is an option for those who want to explore subjects in greater depth and gain a higher education qualification. You can earn a Bachelor’s degree or an engineering degree, followed by a Master’s degree. You can focus entirely on your studies or combine them with work.
  2. Work and market qualifications.
You don’t need to pass your Matura exams to start working and gaining market qualifications. This can help you earn certificates valued by employers, while further training and work experience will help you become a true expert in your chosen field.
  3. Post-secondary school.
You don’t need to have passed your Matura exams for this option either. Courses last up to 2.5 years, and if you pass the relevant exam, you can have your vocational qualifications formally recognised and earn a vocational diploma (see the regulations: link to the Ministry of Education’s official notice). You can also combine your studies with work.
  4. Work and university studies, combined with market qualifications or microcredentials.
How does it work? For example, you might work in administration while studying economics at weekends or taking courses in project management or data analysis. It takes a lot of effort, but you gain financial independence, work experience, qualifications and a higher education degree. In the years that follow, you can continue developing your knowledge and gaining formal recognition for your professional experience.
